The National Weather Service uses 7 frequencies for broadcasting weather information. There are over 940 transmitting sites that cover all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the U.S. Pacific Territories as well as coastal waters neighboring these areas. These broadcasts are maintained by NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) and are available around the clock, 24 hours per day.

The 7 frequencies used in the United States for weather broadcasts are listed below.

Since these frequencies are not available on most common radios, a radio with a weather band is required to receive NWS broadcasts. Simply put, the weather band is the group of fequencies between 162.400 and 162.550. More advanced weather radios also include alarms that sound when the National Weather Service has issued alerts for emergency weather, natural, man-made and civil conditions.

For local frequencies in areas within the United States, refer to the NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) poster available in adobe acrobat (pdf) format. This poster was updated in October, 2004 and shows NWR's broadcast locations and frequencies.
