24/7/365 Weather Information - The NOAA Weather Radio
- NRW - network provides official government - commercial free weather
information.
Weather and All Hazards Radios provide an important link to current
weather conditions and emergency warnings. The NOAA Weather Radio ( NWR
) service broadcasts non-stop 24 hours per day. Current weather conditions
as well as forecasts and outlooks are relayed from the National Weather
Service through the NWR. When weather warnings and watches are issued,
NWR is able to send an alert to specially equipped radios. These radios
are able to be set to sound an alarm when an alert has been issued.
Coverage in the United States is estimated at 97% of
the population. If you would like to check out the coverage for your area,
visit NWS' coverage
maps.
Specific Area Message Encoding ( SAME ) is the method
that NWR uses to 'wake up' weather radios with this feature. First, a
SAME equipped radio is programmed to listen for alerts in a specific area.
This area is usually by county and state. Once an alert is issued for
that specific area/county, the radio will wake-up and play the audio from
NWR or sound an alarm or both, depending on the capabilities of the SAME
equipped radio. |
